I was wondering if anybody knew about the variants of the MBR cart. I found this thread on the subject, but there seems to be issues with the pictures and a lack of consensus on why there are the two versions. Are there any other SNES games that used EPROMs?

I also saw that both variants are not shown in the NA database so whoever has the ability to edit that I can send pictures if need be. Thanks for your help!

The one on the right looks more like a prototype than a variant.

EDIT: The board looks legit for a proto http://www.snescentral.com/pcbboa...

Weird thing is though I have two other copies of the "proto" board version because I wanted to double check the first one and they all have the larger boards. Is it a first print thing or do I just have three protos with full labels? One of the carts is even different with the slot that gets it locked into place.

My guess is they're from an initial batch of carts created for a location test at a gym. The date codes on the chips might provide a clue. The data on the two different types of boards should be compared, too.

They aren't protos and I would guess they are like MrMark said in the other thread:

"Not too surprising, Outback Joey is the same way. Games with low production runs were cheaper to produce with EPROMs than PROMs, you'll see similar things with many unlicensed NES games. Cool none the less. "

they changed the color on the right one because you can see the blue was too light, making the logo harder to read, so at some point they revised the entire thing and made a second run. Either that or its a proto

The gradient is also different on the other three.

It goes from cyan to purple, but the single one goes from blue to magenta.

Got any of these for sale? Sell them to me. I also buy other NES Publisher inserts, and even GB/GBC, and SNES inserts too.

Possibly. The back of the carts both have 1991 and 1992 dates on the backs of the carts (Top is proto-like board, Bottom is regular board). However, Life Fitness didn't release its Exertainment line until 1994. I don't know how to check the date codes or data to determine dates...

Hey buddy!

Can you correct the title of this thread? You spelled "Mountain" wrong and I couldn't find it with a google search, but I knew you made it
I snagged a copy like this the other day and had been looking to get one since 2014 after I passed on a few that you posted here because I knew the labels were different, but didn't really know what I was looking at.

Yeah, they are pretty neat. I like how you can tell them apart just by looking at the label

I noticed this too, but couldn't think of any off the top of my head. I wonder if these were demo or preproduction since they don't have the code like you pointed out!?

I don't know how much of a difference its going to make because the date codes on the eeproms are earlier than the games release. Me knowing nothing about excertainment saw online that the game came out in late 94, where as the eeproms were manufactured on the 18th week of 94 or 22 week of 94 respectively. That can mean absolutely nothing in all reality because they could have just had all this stuff leftover and decided to just use that, or they had some sort of test marketing as they are preproduction boards.

It's certainly a mystery at the moment! Thoughts on the missing label code?

I'm no expert with this stuff by any means, but the fact that it is missing the label code AND it was made with dev boards, I think that it had not been necessarily assigned by Nintendo at that time. By that logic the test market thing would hold true. That's my best guess. Personally, I'd hold it equivelant to the Famicom Adapter Black Box games.

I would guess that they had higher demand for the cart that exceeded their initial production run, so they made some copies on prototype PCBs rather than making a new production run of it.
